CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

Conditional Sentences atau bisa juga disebut sebagai 'If Clause'   atau sebagaimana arti dari kata 'If' itu sendiri yang bermakna jika adalah kalimat yang mengandaikan sesuatu yang mungkin terjadi di masa yang yang akan datang atau mungkin telah terjadi (tidak di masa lalu).

Mari kita lihat apa saja tipe-tipe Conditional Sentences.

Benar sekali. Conditional Sentences terdiri dari empat (4) tipe. Mereka adalah:
1. Zero Conditional
example:

• If the gasoline tank is empty, the car stop.
• If we are hungry, we eat.

dengan susunan kalimat sbb.:
If + S + V1/ to be (present) + O, S + V1/ to be (present) + O
atau:

• Snakes bite if they are scared.
• Meat is unripe if we don't cook well.

dengan susunan kalimat sbb.:

S + V1/ to be (present) + O + if + S + V1/ to be (present) + O

Sebenarnya sama saja hanya dibalik, bagaimana kalau if diletakan di depan dan bagaimana kalau if diletakan di belakang, tetapi tidak mengubah makna sama sekali.

Jadi bisa kita ambil kesimpulan bahwa If Clause adalah present, maka Main Clause-nya juga present atau kebalikannya.

2. First Conditional

Sementara Conditional Sentences dengan tipe ini memiliki If Clause present simple dan Main Clause future tense (using will).

example:

• If I am free, I will come to visit you.
• If you love her, she won't leave you. --> won't = will not

dengan susunan kalimat sbb.:
If + S + V1/ to be (present) + O, S + Will + V1/ been + O
atau:

• We'll late if we aren't hurry.
• You'll be wet if you walk on the rain.

dengan susunan kalimat, sbb.:
S + Will + V1/ been + O + if + S + V1/ to be (present) + O

3. Second Conditional
example:

• If I was a king, I would rule this country well.
• If we were rich, we would buy a plane.

dengan susunan kalimat, sbb.:
If + S + V2/ to be (past) + O, S + Would + V1/ been + O
atau:

• Student would get a good mark if they studied well.
• Sarah wouldn't be embarrassed if she prepared her presentation.

dengan susunan kalimat, sbb.:
S + Would + V1/ been + O + if + S + V2/ to be (past) + O
Atau bisa kita katakan bahwa pada Conditional Sentences tipe ini apabila If Clause-nya simple past maka Main Clause-nya adalah past future (using would).

4. Third Conditional
example:

• If I hadn't eaten so much, I wouldn't have felt sick.
• If we had taken the taxi, we wouldn't have missed the plane.

dengan susunan kalimat, sbb.:
If + S + had V3 + O, S + would + have + V3/ been + O
atau:

• She would have become a teacher if she had gone to university.
• He would have been on time for the interview if he had left the house at nine.

S + would + have + V3/ been + O + if + S + had V3 + O
Bisa kita lihat bahwa kalimat Conditional Sentence diatas terdiri dari If Clause past perfect dan Main Clause past future perfect tense.
