DIRECT AND INDIRECT SPEECH


There are some types of Direct and Indirect Speech, they are:
1.       Statement
2.       Yes/ no question
3.       WH question
4.       Imperative
a.       Positive
b.      Negative

Statement (with the conjunction that)
Direct
Indirect
Teacher said, “We have to have a will to study.”
“They were our beloved grandfather and grandmother”, Carla told me.
Teacher said that we had to have a will to study
Carla told me that they had been their beloved grandmother and grandfather.

Yes/ no question (with the conjunction if/ whether)
Direct
Indirect
Are you happy with him?” Anton asked me.
Dina asked, “Was she a good actress?”
Anton asked me if I was happy with him.
Dina asked if she had been a good actress.

WH question (WH as the conjunction)
Direct
Indirect
The waitress said, “What will you buy, sir?”
“Who was she?” My friend asked.
The waitress said what I would buy.
My friend asked who she had been.

Imperative (with to as the conjunction)
Direct
Indirect
Positive
“Go home early,” mother remind me.
Mother reminds me to go home early.
Negative
“Don’t tell me to wear that stupid hat,” I said.
I said not to tell me not to wear that stupid hat.
